ARTIST STATEMENT

I chase a bright spark that is felt but not seen, luring me through intuitive streams and rearrangements. Patterns emerge, fail, and self-repair.

My work explores dissolution, interruption, and movement. Unfinished, incongruent forms invite inspection, hinting at alternative systems of logic while ultimately refusing clarification. Themes collapse and reconfigure as the fallible human hand meets esoteric notions of geometry, color, and transparency.

My process is rooted in meditative physical repetition — an act that borders on automaticity. The hand moves, the eyes follow, over and over again.

The painted image is a mysterious portal. As I work, I peer through it — a human observer retrieving crude transcriptions of the ineffable.

BIO

Laura Jane Favela is a contemporary abstract artist whose work explores the interplay of fluid movement, interruption, and bound forms through layered mark-making and a contemplative physical process. She holds an MFA from CalArts and has returned to her studio practice after a decade of parenting and caregiving, bringing renewed focus to an evolving body of work.

Her paintings feature intricate, interwoven structures that build and dissolve through gestural movement. She balances fluidity and unpredictability with precise linework, creating compositions that explore fragmentation, repair, and unseen tensile forces.

Favela spent three years caring for her mother, who passed from Parkinson’s Disease in 2024. Grief reshaped her creative process, revealing abstraction as a visceral refuge.

She previously worked as a designer for Disney, Nickelodeon, and BBC before shifting her focus to fine art. Her extensive design experience is reflected in her sensitivity to composition and structure within her paintings.

Favela lives and works in Greater Philadelphia, balancing her studio practice with family life. A mother of three, her work is informed by an evolving philosophical inquiry into form and perception. Outside the studio, she enjoys poetry, meditation, visiting museums and galleries, and exploring Chester County’s bucolic scenery with her husband and children. She is actively seeking gallery representation and exhibition opportunities.
